A4 Assignment - Knex Bridge Report

Overview

Each team will submit a report on the design, testing and results of their Knex bridges, defining their characteristics at each stage and the improvements from one stage to the next.

Details

  • Review all the assignments you've completed and the posts you've made about what you've done this term
    • Include links to specific posts where appropriate in your report
  • Write a detailed report about the background, design, modification, testing and conclusions about your team's final Knex Truss Bridge
  • Include in the report at least the following
    1. Background - for someone reading about your bridge who is not in the class.
    2. The design process you followed including
      1. What goals you set at the beginning
      2. How they changed during the project
      3. The role of individual projects with WPBD, Truss Analysis, Individual Knex Bridge Designs
      4. How the final design was chosen
      5. How it was modified during construction - if at all
      6. Predicted load at failure
    3. Description of your final bridge
      1. Plan & Elevation Drawings
      2. Bill of Materials
      3. Cost
      4. Photographs of the bridge
    4. Testing Results
      1. Load at failure
      2. Describe the failure mode of the bridge
    5. Conclusions about your bridge design
      1. Did it behave as predicted in terms of load and failure mode
    6. Future Work
      1. How would you modify your bridge if you were to design another version

  • Blog

Constraints

  • None other than writing clearly and using appropriate images.
  • Bridge span for this assignment is 36" (5/1/2012 clarification)
  • Additions as of 5/9/2012 post (put here 5/22/2012)
    • Width of bridge is at least 3.5"
    • Vehicles should be able to drive across the bridge
      • For your last bridge there must be a "tube" at least 3" wide x 2" high - continuous
    •  You can only contact the supports at one level at each end
      • For this last bridge we will span between the tables, a plywood surface.
      • There will not be the "V" to take advantage of from the sawhorses
